Biographical/Historical note: In 1945 the release of atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki brought World War II to an end. Soon after, the Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union began. The most significant outcome of the Cold War was the growing arsenal of nuclear weapons in both countries in an effort to create Mutually Assured Destruction (MAD). Many believed that nuclear arms were not the answer and joined peace movements that addressed the issue of disarmament.
